I dropped by the recently-opened SM Annex primarily to scout for new places to eat. One of the new restaurants you can find there is Peri-Peri Charcoal Chicken.

What I find most interesting about Peri-Peri is their unique 49-peso 'Soup and Beverage all you want' deal. They usually serve mushroom and chicken soup in this bar plus a variation of drinks of soda, juices, etc. Most other restaurants would serve drinks alone that cost nearly as much as this price..while Peri-Peri gives the liberty of drinks and soup all you want for that incredibly affordable value.

I also love that Peri-Peri meal deals are very much worth the price both in quantity and quality. I tried out their pasta and chicken meal. And for 210Php I could hardly finish the entire plate of 1/4 chicken, caesar salad, and alfredo pasta. Somehow, for these kinds of meal deals, I've gotten used to other restaurants around the city that serve a little bit of the different dishes. But Peri-Peri doesn't do that...they serve the salad and the pasta as though they were separate orders put together in one huge oblong plate.
I'm a huge fan of their version of caesar salad (as shown above) and their mozzarella sticks. I wasn't able to take a shot of the latter, unfortunately. I also like the unique taste of their chicken. They have various flavors to it like lemon, mildly spicy, and regular spicy. I usually go for the mildly spicy one. I mix it with their very own spicy red sauce and top the rice with gravy and I just couldn't go wrong. See below for more photos of Peri-Peri's servings...or better yet, check them out at the SM Annex. Be sure to go there with an empty tummy.

These thing happens very rarely. Earlier this morning was one of those times.

For some reason, I was craving for Caesar salad. It was good enough that I had a bottle of Lady's Choice classic caesar dressing stocked in the fridge along with other essential ingredients, lettuce, tomato, cheese. I thought of toasting bread too but was just hungry enough to not opt to wait and so I reheated leftover fries instead.

So after about 15 minutes of preparation, here's my version of homemade caesar salad:

But more than that, I also love one of their specialties, the Charlie Chan Pasta. I looked up this name online as I wondered why they would use a guy's name to label a dish. At first I thought maybe Charlie Chan is a chef who created this yummy treat. Or maybe he is the owner of the food chain itself. Turns out, he's none of the above. All that was was returned in my search results was that of a fictional character. And so I thought to myself maybe they named it after him, the character, to give it a Chinese feel because this pasta did after all, have ingredients of that origin.

I found myself wanting to hit the kitchen and see if I can make my own Charlie Chan Chicken Pasta at home. And so looking up the recipe online, I found that I could actually easily find the ingredients at any local mall! I got excited and hit the nearest grocery stacks immediately! I bought all that I needed as listed in the recipe I found at food.com.

I'm pretty sure you guys could make it too! It was really easy to make. In less than an hour you'll bring Yellow Cab's Charlie Chan Chicken Pasta freshly cooked right out of your stove and into your own hungry stomach. My finished product is not spicy at all! That kinda frustrated me because I wanted it to be really spicy like the one from Yellow Cab. Next time, I'll make sure to put in more chilli-garlic sauce. And I'll add some garnish to. AND I'll try to improve on the texture. See image below to see my first attempt at a home made Charlie Chan and click on the link after it to view the full recipe and complete directions.
But whenever it does, I find that Cello's Doughnuts and Dips is one of the things on my sweet tooth's list. It has been like that ever since I first got a taste of their varieties from the Sales Street branch, which is actually their pioneering one here in the city.

Now, this Quezon City-born brand has taken their Oreo- and cheese-flavored doughnuts and other favorites to SM City Davao where it is accessible to a much larger, sweet toothed-DavaoeƱo audience. It was silly because I first learned of their SM branch by seeing people in the foodcourt, which is on the 2nd floor, munching over a bunch of mini doughnuts from a very familiar, orange-colored dozen box. I thought to myself, Cello's has probably branched out here, at SM. Otherwise, they'd have bought those from the Sales Street branch, which is quite far, and brought them all the way to a Quimpo Boulevard foodcourt to finish them off. I didn't think it was possible to bring them all the way from point a to b without emptying the box somewhere in between. And so yes, later on that day, I would find out that Cello's actually IS in SM City Davao already...and situated, ironically so, near the main entrance of the mall. I would've spotted it easily if it weren't for the stairs that was at its opposite.
My Cello's top picks are the Oreo- and cheese-flavoured ones. The Oreo doughnuts for me has just the right amount of sweetness. The surprise that a cheese flavor brings to supposedly-sweet bun is also keeping me constantly hooked to it. But more than their unique flavors, I believe that the consistency of their dough sets them apart from other brands. They also have letter- and number-shaped doughnuts along with the heart and star shapes, which you guys can order for special ocassions. You can form them into names or messages and make your gifts a lot more special and meaningful. You'll need to order them 3 hours in miminun ahead of time to allow them preparation allowance. Some flavors of these specially shaped doughnuts sell for 45Php per piece (cheese, oreo, chocolate, honey glazed, durian, chocnut, double chocolate, choco chip peanut butter, peanut butter, cinnamon crunch) while others, for 50Php (choco oreo, peanut butter oreo, M&M, candy sprinkled).

Okay I'll stop right here before I find myself rushing to get some doughnuts in orange boxes. Lolz. Here are some photos for your sweet eyes...
La Toscana Italian Bar and Restaurant currently offers this every 2-5PM and gives Davao a chance to get more of their finest pizzas. Just like how usual buy 1 take 1 pizzas around town go, you'd get two pizzas and pay for the more expensive one. I've already talked about how I love their place in a previous blog post and now they're making me love them even more.

Oh how awesome La Toscana's pizzas are! As soon as it reaches my table I'd practically swallow it whole. LOL! Okay, that was exaggerating...I'd rather savor in every bite I take of it but I want it hot and fresh so I usually eat it quickly. One could easily finish an entire pie and still want some more. It makes me wanna wish it's 2-5PM all day.
But this time, for pasta, we ordered Aglio Olio e Peperoncino. This is olive oil and garlic pasta with a great deal of pepper. And boy was it peperoncino-nity all the way! I mean hell, it was hot. But it's the kind of chilli hot goodness that makes you want it more. And when you drink water it makes the spicy flavor intensify! Trust me you'll need soda or, in my case, banana split to get your taste buds back to their default state.

So yeah I can't help but wanna be back at La Toscana again for pizza and pasta. And I'd bet you wanna go there too. Don't take my word for it. See for yourself.

at the old Ranchero branch

Ranchero has been one of Davao's top destinations for grill and steak for as long as I can remember. I have always loved their old location at Tionko Avenue. Even if the place wasn't air conditioned, it was well ventilated and I couldn't help but enjoy the ambiance that perfectly matched their brand name. It was like being in a refreshingly ancient ranch house somewhere.

Just January of this year, Ranchero moved to a new location in Torres corner Jacinto Extension Street, which I still haven't been to yet. What I have been able to visit is their branch in Abreeza Mall, right at the 3rd floor, along those array of restaurants and coffee shops located "outdoors". And yes..I love their new place!

That feeling of being in a ranch house is still there when you're in Ranchero Abreeza. Only it got more modernized and, well, better ventilated. They did very well with the interior designing. And to stay consistent with their brand, the waiters and waitresses dress in cowboy attires complete with cowboy hats.

The latter takes pride in their homemade recipes that are both visually and gastronomically pleasing. Whenever I go there, I couldn't resist taking a shot of their array of mouth-watering gelato. And I do not get satisfied with just a single serving of it. I usually go for the unlimited package which is 199Php. This is money very well spent, I tell you! Take a look..
Other dishes of Crepelato's that I've tried are the Longanisa Ala Ecijano and Monggolian BBQ. Both were okay. I think I am yet to try their best dishes and I can't wait to be back there yet again to have an enjoyable meal. So anyway...back to their crepes and gelato...I have more for your eyes right now...check them out!
However, I found a couple of Krispy Kreme mini outlets on certain areas in Davao. The ones who want them badly can at least satisfy their cravings temporarily. Surprisingly, coffee and food isn't necessarily on that list. This is because I don't just eat and drink but I more importantly try to be as productive as I can be while I'm in there. Plus I also just assume that the food is good in semi-expensive establishments such as coffee shops so..
When I first stepped inside, I was greeted not with the scent of fresh coffee, but with a very..VERY nice interior which instantly made me forget if there ever was a fresh scent of coffee in there at all. I was instantly in love with the place. And this is not only because the seats were pink(lol!), or that the place was appropriately lighted, or that there was a couch(a pink one!), or that there was a huge flat screen television for all to enjoy, or that there was Wi-Fi and charging outlets, but because..well..I was in love with what was right before me! Even if, as I have previously mentioned, almost all the seats were pink, there was something with this place that didn't make it entirely girlish. The silver ornaments and grayish wall kind of neutralized the feminine touch given by the seats. There were works of art at certain corners, friendly attendants, nice comfort room, and oh did I mention the couch already?

that pink couch!

For me the place was awesome. I knew I'll be back there sooner than later. I even regretted having dinner before going there because they apparently had so many things on the menu - pasta, rice meals, pica-pica, and yes, of course, you couldn't take the coffee out of that list.

Since I was very full already, all I had was just frozen Mocha coffee, and cheesesticks served later on. They were both fine. Not as wonderful as their place. But I'm excited to try other things on their menu.

We got there early and so we were practically the only ones inside. But after about 45 minutes, people were suddenly coming in and the place was packed. I was surprisingly not distracted from tasks even then. Being on the couch has worked very well for me. All I needed was my headsets and I was living in my own world.
So yeah, that was my first G Cafe experience. The first of many, I'm pretty sure.

G CafƩ is located along Quimpo Blvd (near SM City Davao). They're open from 7:00 AM until 1:00 AM.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1474195158061007921.post-4253412295848101342011-06-12T08:55:00.000-07:002011-06-13T04:02:59.704-07:00Red Kimono at AbreezaThis is the first time, and probably not the last, that I'd be writing about a resto and not post photos of the food I ate. My excuse? We had to struggle with parking for about 30 minutes. It had been over 7 hours since my last meal and, as you now would be able to guess, I was so so so hungry that picking up chopsticks instead of spoon and fork was all I could do to prevent myself from engaging in a total pig out.

So, Red Kimono, yes...here are some borrowed shots from their Facebook Page..
It's one of the latest additions to Davao's array of Japanese restaurants. Like many food shops in Abreeza, this one is also originally from Manila.

During that hungry Sunday night, we ordered Ebi Tempura meal, Katusdon, Chicken Teriyaki, Curry Chicken, Miso soup, and Tofu. We were 5 in the group and the bill summed up to about 1,200Php.

The Ebi Tempura meal had 4 pieces of breaded prawns, really big ones! It also had rice and rich, japanese sauce and veggies. Plus, 3 balls of chocolate sumthings, which reminds me of munchkins. What a huge meal it was! The katsudon was in an enormous serving, too. Katsudons are always heavenly for me and this isn't an exception. It cost around 200 pesos, which might have made it less heavenly, but the taste was really good and well worth it. The curry chicken was what I ordered. It was breaded, boneless chicken with rice and curry sauce that is served separately. It was okay for me, not as heavenly as the katsudon and the teriyaki chicken. The teriyaki chicken! I could easily say it was my favorite among all of our orders. It was served in one of those modern Japanese restaurants' rectangle plates that had compartments(the ebi tempura meal was in a similar presentation). Other restaurants have them too sweet, some serve them too salty. This was somewhere in between and the chicken was really tender. Chicken Teriyaki - Red Kimono nailed it! I didn't get a chance to taste the Miso soup and tofu. But judging from my 3-year old nephew's reaction, I think they were both as yummy as they could be. He didn't leave any for me to taste. Lol!

So that was my Red Kimono experience. You may find them at the ground floor of the Abreeza Mall of Davao somewhere after Starbucks (outside area).Unknownnoreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1474195158061007921.post-4609273778166359212011-06-08T22:54:00.000-07:002011-07-30T19:49:19.566-07:00Home Made Pasta - White PuttanescaMy apartment mate loves to cook. And I can't tell you enough how much compatibility we have considering that I very much love to eat. LOL! A few weeks ago, she found the urge to pick up her magic wand, that is, her cooking spoon, and I thought to myself...yeah..pasta time!

She has an incredibly large pasta cookbook stored in her mind that I didn't quite know what kind would be served this time. She cooked two types of pasta, one red, the other white. While the red one was being prepared, we were verbally daydreaming about other kinds of pasta that could possibly be made and she came to the point where she talked about how anchovies would go really well as an ingredient. I remembered we had anchovies in the fridge and her magic wand simply cast a spell on the other half of the pasta noodles and created what I would like to call - white puttanesca pasta. The lady with the magic spoon didn't actually give it that name, but I went to an Italian restaurant last week and found, on their menu, that puttanesca had similar base ingredients. Olive oil, anchovies, capers, pasta = heaven!

The taste of all these ingredients combined together made the incredibly pale pasta the tastiest I've ever had. Don't judge the pasta by its color, as many would usually do. Thanks to the lady with the magic spoon, now I'm obsessed with any pasta that has capers and anchovies! :)

I first heard of this burger house in Juan Luna Street of Davao City from a friend of mine. I was told that they serve the best burger in the city and that it costs less than a hundred pesos. When it comes to food, I don't take anyone's word for anything. I go to the place and see for myself...and that's what I did exactly with Harley Blvd.

I came in there with high expectations and was totally surprised that my friend wasn't kidding about the less-than-a-hundred price. The American owner, who also was the chief cook, welcomed us to the place. He explained that the burgers would take about 20 minutes to cook because he doesn't pre-cook them beforehand. After a little chitchat, we placed our orders and a few minutes later were served with this...and were silent for the next 15 minutes for a couple of reasons..

Harley Boulevard Motor Cafe burgers

Harley's burgers were enormous! And this goes for both size and taste. This is a different kind of experience for me since all the burgers I've tasted has never been this...well..."beefy". When my friend first told me about this, I thought he was exaggerating. And I was wrong. This can easily beat all the popular burger joints that has existed for years. You could just imagine why we were silent for next few minutes. Being first timers, we were all just savoring in the goodness of what we were practically ravening at that time. After Harley's, the rest of the burgers will simple be average. Get there now! And see what I mean.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1474195158061007921.post-22955897425211956142011-06-05T08:13:00.000-07:002011-07-07T00:36:17.500-07:00Green Coffee: Comfy In and OutWith a coffee shop situated at almost every corner and mall in Davao, one could easily say that this city is in the coffee-shop era. It's not even about the coffee anymore. The things that people do in these cozy shops range from having meetings, dining, socializing, studying(or at least attempting to), launching products, or simply hanging out with friends or a loved one. It just is the place to be nowadays, or so it seems.

The competition is tough for this kind of venture as Davao is filled with coffee shops. It has even become tougher as one prominent brand has had its franchised branch open at the city's newest mall. A recently opened coffee shop in Torres named Green Coffee seems to understand this competition very much as they have built their place like no one else has in town - they air-conditioned both the in and outside of their place keeping 'coffee lovers' comfortable no matter where in the place they're seated.

inside Green Coffee

What I love about coffee shops is being able to have that feel of being away from home yet at the same time being able to bring 'home' with me. I'm not sure if that made any sense at all. Lol! I just love coffee shops that give me that homey feeling even when I know I'm not at my own home. That's what Green Coffee gives me. Good food. Very nice place.

It seems ironic that I'm writing about a coffee shop and I'm not talking about coffee in any part of the post. But, yeah, I can't speak for Green Coffee's main brew yet 'cause the only drinks I had during my visit there was their Mango Passion Fruit smoothie. It was good, that drink..I liked it. Here are a few shots of the food we had...
Green Coffee. You'll love it in there, I'm pretty sure. There's a lot in their Italian menu that we haven't tried yet. But one thing's for sure...we're going back for the Choco Lava dessert. :) Ciao for now!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1474195158061007921.post-56522492448690709822011-05-11T09:33:00.000-07:002011-06-27T15:31:17.031-07:00Abreeza Davao List of Food ShopsJust when I have decided to go on a food trip hiatus for a little while, here comes a bunch of food stores opening in the new Abreeza Mall tomorrow...
This might just give you the idea that I am a huge fan of it. And YES, more than anything, I am a pizza lover! When I was a kid, my favorite food from the school canteen was, well, for the lack of a better term, the pizza. As I've grown to be an adolescent, more restaurants have opened in Davao and, to my utmost delight, many of them served..wait for it...pizza! And even up to now, you could still bring me to a pizza buffet (if there is any), and I shall not get enough of it. It's my ultimate comfort food. Sometimes, it wouldn't even matter what place you'd take me to, or what kind of pizza they'd serve. I'd take even the simplest type of pizza any day.

There is, however, one place that gives me what I like to call pizza nirvana. It's called La Pizzeria Nel Tralizzio, a pizza and pasta house situated right in between Bistro Rosario restaurant and Cups and Lowercase coffee shop at Torres St., Davao City. La Pizzeria's Meatlovers Pizza is simply the most awesome I have ever tasted. Believe it or not, I usually eat half of this entire 15-inch goody all by myself.
I've dined there a number of times and I haven't tasted anything that I didn't like. The pasta, the pizza, the grilled delights (the ribs), the desserts, everything is really good. The ambiance of the place will make you wanna stay longer too. It doesn't matter if you're with family, friends, co-workers, or a special someone...Coco's will give you the dining experience you always wish to have. Yes, there may be a couple of grumpy waitresses you would encounter and the bathroom isn't that grand, but hey...it doesn't necessarily spoil the great dining experience..haha! I just kinda had to get that in. Lol!
Sankai is an authentic Japanese Restaurant located in downtown Davao. I didn't get the chance to visit the place until recently. And yes! The food is awesome! Their California Maki, in particular, is my favorite. Among all the Maki's from a couple of restaurants I've tried, they have got the best. Bigger in size. More tender. Tastier. And the mayo...just..yum!

More of Sankai Japanese Restaurant after the jump...

I was also able to try their seafood ramen. The taste was something new for me. Most of the Ramen that I've tried before seemed salty. This one isn't. It had eggs, shrimp, squid (if I'm not mistaken), and some other seafoods that I didn't recognize(lol).

I also wasn't able to resist ordering one of my favorite Japanese dishes, the Yakisoba. This one isn't like any other I've had before, too. Well, to be honest I've only tried three Yakisoba preparations...this being the second! And the third being the instant Yakisoba that they sell in supermarkets so I don't think that really counts. And that would be 2 Yakisoba trials for me. :P But this one was was kind of unique. Sankai added some sort of thin thingies that I didn't recognize. Haha! Pardon me, I'm one of those food trippers who sometimes do not care what's on her dish as long as it tastes yummy. So anyways...this one's good, but it isn't my favorite Yakisoba...the other one is(more on that later).

You could find Sankai at Corner Arellano Street, Davao City. It's just across Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas. Not sure what their operating hours are but two things I know...one - they close up at around 2pm right after all customers have their lunch then resume at around 5pm, I think, for dinner...and two - they're open on Sundays. That would be a great place to bring the family for lunch. :) I'll update the business hours area of this post when I can get more info. Most of my newly discovered Pinoy specialties usually become my favorite. Like the Beef Salpicao, which was one of the dishes served during a food tasting event at Pepper and Peppers that I was invited to a couple of months back.

Beef Salpicao, Pepper and Peppers

The Beef Salpicao is actually beef tenderloin that are cut into cubes and marinated in oyster or Worcestershire sauce, then stir-fried with lots of garlic in it. Well, I don't exactly know the exact details of how it can be cooked to achieve that incredibly tender and Pinoy flavor to it. But Pepper and Peppers Manager/Chef Chique Aportadera sure as heck does! It became an instant favorite.

Not only does Chef Chique make my now-favorite Beef Salpicao, she also cooks other Pinoy specialties such as Bagnet, a meticulously prepared Ilocano dish that is the tribe's version of Fried Pork Belly. And boy what an incredible version it is! Before Bagnet turns into an unbelievably crunchy delight, it has to be boiled, sun dried, and then deep fried into brown, mouth-watering goodness. I unfortunately wasn't able to take a picture of it but you may check it out at the Pepper and Peppers Facebook Page.

Aside from the foods I've mentioned above, Pepper and Peppers also served other dishes during the Avatar Media-organized food tasting event such as Pumpkin Soup, Caesar's Salad, Seafood Pasta, Baby Back Ribs, Crispy Fried Steak, and their house specialty, Iberian Chicken. That's what you'll be seeing in the following images.

You would wanna order immediately after being greeted not only by their accommodating staff but also of the mouth-watering aroma of pasta being prepared in their express cooking area situated right at the entrance. As their name would stand for, the pasta gets cooked quickly. The other dishes take a little bit longer than the latter though. But quickly cooked or not, all the food we've tasted we're really good. Check out the pictures and you'll see what I mean.

Clearly this blog post isn't about the donuts from that brand, which I still appreciate to this day.

I really hate to say it but Krispy Kreme Donuts HAS sort of become the new pasalubong ng bayan (no pun intended). I hope no donut company would kill me for associating their tagline with another brand. Haha!

I can't help it though. Among the very few times that I went to Manila, this usually is what the people from Davao expect from me as a pasalubong. And yes, the same thing goes for me when I'm the one who's expecting for a pasalubong from Manila. Hihi! When you're at a Krispy Kreme branch, people would get the damned donuts by dozens. And I even saw one carrying around 10 boxes! He must have been going for the record!

And I also heard rumors about an entire branch of it opening in the Abreeza Mall, which is set to open pretty soon. I guess there would be less Dabawenyos bringing Krispy Kreme as pasalubong from Manila when that time comes.
These two courses are the most delicious of all. Lol! Simply because they hold annual food events and exhibits that either let people sample their food or be in a fine-dining event with a full out buffet from various cuisines. See how delicious this course is? :)

The photos you're seeing below are a part of one of their annual exhibits. These are created by students. Kudos to the ND-HRM students of UIC who participated in this event.

But nowadays, I go there to get my own heaven in a small plate that has a serving of their blueberry cheesecake. The Diminishing Returns Law does NOT apply to my cravings for this heavenly Chippens dessert. Lol! I just can't get enough of it. In fact, writing this entry is making me go there now and so I would have to stop. :D Later, guys!

If you're a fan of spaghetti, and that of the Italian type, then you'd be a huge fan of Grub's very own Spaghetti and Meatballs. This rich and creamy pasta's taste has a hint of herbs that I couldn't fathom. The reason being the fact that the only herbs whose scent I'm familiar to is the Rosemary and Basil and I'm doubtful of these two's existence in Grub's dish. (Okay, maybe the basil, but not definitely not the Rosemary).

You would maybe know better about what the darned herbs are once you taste this dish. It's spaghetti that is the keeper type. You're in for a treat.
